This is how my morning started ...yesterday I guess (I missed last night as we had some neighbours knock on the door!) Decided to sit out on the porch and chat with them. Cool people around here - lot's of students! We're getting some invites to local places which is very cool.
I made us breaky. Some oriental yams, guacamole, black beans and eggs with some hot sauce! Couldn't leave out the banana and almond milk smoothie I made and local coffee. It was suppose to be a big day in the water so I wanted to carb up! Seems my body has a natural gauge, I've heard only recently about carb cycling and I'm like OOOHHH sounds awesome, but I have way to many other things to focus on now so I let my body tell me what it needs.
I eat my meals based on my choice to be 95% pescatarian, consuming minimal dairy, low sodium, minimal sugar (natural heck yes, but still minimal), gluten-free when I can AND all of these things are flexible. If I need something, as I mentioned, my body just screams at me and I give it the goods. There is room for the human in me to breath.
I went to explore Lahaina for the 3rd time and found myself on FRONT STREET, the cutest little strip of shops and restaurants and what is so crazy is that earlier in the week I was in a bunch of surf shops looking for local bikini designers and one of the girls mentioned this place called Pak Aloha. She said they didn't have their own store ... and I just felt like that wasn't true so pretended like I didn't hear it.
All of this to say, for whatever reason I found myself on Front street and walked to this little jewellery stand where all sorts of gorgeous turquoise pieces were there calling me over! Just as the owner acknowledged my curious eyes scanning the table, I looked up and saw right past her.... THIS SIGN! (see below)
CRAZY RIGHT! BAM. No big deal, just getting lead to this random tiny shop in the back of a cluster. Like a hidden gem. Well here it is. The secret is out and I love their bikinis!
So this is where you can see where I've circled in magenta the "PAK" portion of the logo. Unreal that I found it. I got myself my dream wetsuit. One-piece, long sleeve, colourful, perfect fit and just felt like it was made for me. Little bit of collaboration between Brazil and Hawaii on this bikini line, which is why the bottoms are mostly brazilian or thong style. I find the sexiest way to wear a bikini - show those curves and that lovin' !
I got to skype with my handsome man who always brings even more light to my life than the Hawaiian skies. #iamsocheesy #ldr #lovenerd
I finished the night off with a hard circuit and always love to snap a photo of the post glow! MOVE YOUR BODY GUYS and get those natural endorphins flowing!
I learned something about the summer time in Maui today. The waves can be fairly small (on the west side). This would have been good to scope out before grabbing my board yesterday because getting a 5'5 Fish was a joke for me at Goofy Foot this morning ha! I couldn't catch anything and after 2 years without touching a surfboard MAN DO MY SHOULDERS KILL RIGHT NOW. I am legit laying down in bed typing this article and my forearms are even cramping. I got up once - barely. I'm returning my board tomorrow and for this month will be likely using a longboard bought at COSTCO just to goof around on. I just have this massive vision for my perfect board - which I thought I got..but easily moving on from. Look at this beauty. What a dream. She's not mine, not even close. Just throwing it out there GALLANT & JONES I would be very excited if you could make me a custom board! I've put my intentions out there and one day (in the near future I will find my match!)
Today started out early for us again. 5:30 AM is what I try to do every morning. I wake up, have a vegan shake with a banana mixed in and chug about a half - to a whole litre of water.
** SIDE NOTE HERE: I am doing a 4 month challenge to completely rip my body up so I am traveling with the complete intention to be healthy, vibrant and in the flow. That being said, I'm going to share what I do here and there and would love to connect if you have any questions!
We grabbed my board and were off to Goofy Foot in Lahaina, Maui. The waves as I mentioned were tiny! It's been ages for me. You should know as well the bed of the ocean is covered in coral - not sharp but rocky so fall flat ! I cut myself walking in today so water shoes might be a good option if you can't remember to keep your feet off the ground.
I won't lie I was PRETTY frustrated with my board and finding out all of these things (small waves, coral etc) Costa Rica was such a nice treat to face plant into deep ocean without the risk of hurting myself and the comfort of my duck dives on a short board. LONG BOARDING is SO much fun but god I hate getting past big waves. If I screw up passing through the wave (which has happened multiple times) I end up getting dragged out helplessly by my ankle.
Went to the shop to switch my board and headed to Grandma's off the Highway. It was even worse for me - smaller waves. I LEARNED MY LESSON. Off to Costco tomorrow haha. Get me a freaking long board asap to goof around with!
Headed back and had some veggies, avocado and poke. Then I went and met up with a surfer from Argentina who is trying to sell his board - one day he will see this for sure and sorry to say (I'm not taking the board :S) I so appreciate you taking the time to bring it over to Kihei though! We had a nice chat and all to say as to why I'm sharing this story is that he didn't take money in passing me the board. He just said - "If you love it, we'll meet up and you can pay but if you don't then just bring it back."... "As long as you don't leave Maui with the board there are no issues." ALOHA! Love just pure trust I have been so impressed by the vibe here it's insane. First day it was the person working at the Telus Booth who lent me an iPhone with a sim card in it (I bought my package and everything) but when loading my new sim to my own phone, we realized my cell was locked! *Really didn't remember that. Just crazy amounts of trust here. I'm just suppose to bring the cell and surf board back when I'm ready essentially. Amazing. This is what it's all about.
Did a bit of work at Starbucks, had a few calls and a beautiful chat with some of my teammates on ZOOM. Zipped back home and went for a run, did a circuit and had some white rice, black beans, brussel sprout salad with a little bit of hummus and salsa on the side. Filled me right up I couldn't even finish it!

We touched down in Maui early hours of Saturday morning after a LONG run of flights, layovers and near crisis moments with United Airlines.
My day started off at 5:30 AM with a morning run on Sugar Beach. This is where we are staying in Kihei ... It has an amazing coast line and after my runs I do a circuit followed by some deep stretches; sinking my feet and heels into the wet sand.
I met a woman yesterday from Australia, we had an INSTANT connection. Cait from Australia, who left the Fire and Paramedic service to pursue her other passions, some were more aligned with her soul at this point in her life. She now runs a surf, yoga and spiritual retreat called Swell Women with some amazing ladies! She invited us to join the group to check out what they are all about tomorrow so naturally I was frantic to find my perfect SURFBOARD!
After weeks scanning Craigslist and other second-hand websites in Maui, I called up a shop in Lahaina, HI called Maui Surfboards and drove to the shop (opened for 50 years) - handmade boards which are STUNNING ! We met Wayno there and he was such a character. Talked me through which board to get for my size, style, skill etc. I felt super taken care of and it was immediately a connection with this baby.
After our lovely chat, Caity and I were off to the house to eat a bit before heading to the beach. I swear guys, I have travelled to so many places for variations of time between 5 days and 1 year. I have always found it EXTREMELY difficult to eat healthy while traveling unless I have my own space. Not only do we have a house for the month to do our own cooking but with the nutritional shakes I use (vegan/dairy-free) I am able to keep a very low budget on food..YES..even here in HAWAII ! It's nuts. I don't feel bloated for once on my vacations, it's amazing.
Yes I eat real, healthy, whole foods too ! ! ! I love to cook, it's one of my passions! We have access to such fresh fish here and it's all greens for us. Vegetarian but really I guess a Pescatarian. All meat is eliminated for me with the exception of fish and seafood. This is one of my all time favourite dishes: ȶʊռǟ քօӄɛ: This is a gluten free dish if you use gluten-free soy sauce.
Sesame oil, soy sauce and lime juice mixed with shallots, ginger and garlic for the dressing (bit of pepper), then Ahi Tuna, Watermelon cubes, green onion, cilantro, and I add the avocados only when I am going to eat a bowl - so it doesn't spoil or get mushy in the big batch. I've been eating this for 2 days straight now haha....It really is my go to.
Did I mention I love Tuna Poke !?!?
I love the ocean. It brings a sense of inner peace to my soul. There is truly no other place I feel at home with myself. I've learned to adapt and adjust to everyday living. Truly since I backpacked that year from Costa Rica to Brazil...a part of me discovered total and complete BLISS. I had the answer to my bliss. I found my home which was anywhere and everywhere but on the move. I love to be adaptable, on my toes, quick to think and figure things out. Meeting new people from all walks of life, learning about each and every unique perspective and set of eyes. It's hard to communicate HOW much value there is in experiences.
You wouldn't believe me if I told you how many times I tell people I'm off to travel and they say "well enjoy it while you're young". I always reply, well this is my life and always will be my main calling. I have a career which supports my passion and everyday I become a little more comfortable and confident sharing that. In fact I feel like screaming it to the world.
Why is it good to get it out while I'm young? So that I make sure I actually get to do something fun with my life? Because working 9-5 and having a busy family, busy job, busy schedule is going to be so BUSY that I won't be able to enjoy those blissful moments anymore?
What if we stopped looking at life this way? Seriously, what would I have to do or say to ask you to STOP right in this moment and question why you have the beliefs you have? Is it making you totally happy? Feel totally fuelled, energized, passionate? Do you come home lifted or drained? Who do you surround yourself with? What stories do you share or accept to hear?
I'm not saying travel is for you, or anyone. It's for me. I'm wondering if people know there is space between their current way of life and desired way of life, why the F they don't take a stand and PURSUE with DELIBERATE AND RELENTLESS INTENTION to have that which they most desire.
This photo is MY personal BLISS. Gazing at the ocean as the sun goes down, bikini on, vibrant colours representing my heart, sandy, greasy, salty hair - NATURAL. Slow breaths to stay grounded and in a state of appreciation, holding my new BABY! This doesn't have to be an "all the time kind of thing", but it definitely has to be a Jess thing every year, many times to support in my ever-expanding connection to my SELF.
What are you doing to connect with yourself everyday? What do you need to make more time for in life? What do you need allow yourself to be real and honest about. Are you ready to step outside the square box society has built for us? Want to find out how else to do things and to be successful, in bliss, in connection and in community? If you're saying YES and vibbing yes. I am so happy for you and if you aren't I'm still so happy for you. You're on your own journey and that is just beautiful. Enjoy your life, ask questions and when you've done all the research you can...stay calm, stay humble and ask yourself in a quiet moment what the answer is. It lies within, just have patience that when you are ready to know, you will allow the answers to flow.
